Update: Brady the duct-taped dumpster dog sailed through surgery and doing well
by Katerina Lorenzatos Makris

Thanks to the kindness of volunteers and the generosity of donors, Brady, the 14-week-old puppy found duct-taped and dumped in the trash last week, underwent successful surgery to repair his broken leg Monday.

Christina Peyton, who helped rescue Brady from a Dallas, Texas dumpster on Saturday, provided the following update on the little pit bull mix in an email interview with Animal Beat.

“Brady's surgery went perfectly this morning. His leg is pinned back together and can now start healing up. In about six weeks he will be able to romp and play probably for the first time in his life.

“He will learn how wonderful life can be outside of a tiny wire cage and with people that love you. My guess is that he has never felt grass or had any room to run so he has many exciting days ahead.

“People are amazing. It reminds me that for every horrible case of animal cruelty we see there are thousands of wonderful people who care. Brady's story is a victory for animal lovers!

“In a matter of days we raised over $2500 in our Internet chip-in, and we can assume that thousands have heard his story. If each of these people will keep an eye out and take the time to report neglectful behavior they see maybe we can stop this before the dogs are tortured and dumped off.

“Creating awareness and educating people on the reality of animal cruelty is so important. If we all can stand up and show that the mistreatment of animals is unacceptable maybe these cases will be taken more seriously.

“The hope is that the laws will catch up and represent how most people already feel. Animals are not property and cruelty to them often indicates other criminal behavior is involved.

“We want to thank all those who donated or sent well wishes for Brady. He is a miracle and we are so excited to watch him heal. Brady will be a wonderful addition to a family soon!”
