Stars pose for provocative new animal PSAs

by Katerina Lorenztos Makris

Holly Madison on crimson satin sheets, her blonde tresses in fetching deshabille, gives a peek of bosom and bottom. “Be Proud of Your Skin,” the copy reads. “No 2 Fur.”

Jillian Michaels, nestling against Buzz the horse, stares down the camera in a tight, low-cut T-shirt amidst the words, “Wanted Alive, Stop the Genocide, Stop the BLM Roundup.”

Pamela Anderson’s ice blue eyes and the little white Chihuahua in her arms implore you to “Stop Pet Theft.”

These sumptuous images are among the new print public service announcements (PSAs) produced by Last Chance for Animals (LCA) and talented photographer Christopher Ameruoso.

Stars pose to raise awareness on a wide range of animal issues including “the Bureau of Land Management’s roundup of America ’s wild horses, illegal dog fighting and pet theft,” according to a media release from LCA, while also promoting adoption of shelter animals and responsible pet care.

"If a picture says a thousand words then our hope is each PSA will encourage individuals to take a stand,” said Chris DeRose of LCA. “The public needs to know about the cruelty and abuse animals face so we can make positive changes on behalf of animals.”

Ameruoso added, “We all need to take a stand and speak for the animals who cannot speak for themselves.”

DeRose, an actor, reporter, and former police officer, founded LCA in 1984 to combat vivisection using non-violent strategies. Since then the group “has worked on virtually every animal rights issue, including farming, fur, and animals in entertainment,” according to the LCA website.

Ameruoso’s lush photographs have appeared on over 40 magazine covers and in at least three books. He is the founder of Paw Print magazine.

Other celebs appearing in the PSAs include Mini-Me Verne Troyer, Maria Menounos, and more.

“All print PSAs will be available for download in high-resolution JPEG format at no cost on LCA’s website for print or web advertising,” the media release stated. “New print PSAs will be created each month to further educate the public and will be seen in advertising spaces, including billboards, donated to LCA.”

Disclosure: In 2007 Chris DeRose wrote an endorsement for a book co-written by the author of this article, and Christopher Ameruoso donated a photograph of actress and animal activist Alexandra Paul for that book.

Katerina Lorenzatos Makris is the author of 17 novels for publishers including Avon, E.P. Dutton, and Simon & Schuster, and hundreds of articles for publications such as National Geographic Traveler, San Francisco Chronicle, and Veggie Life. She wrote a teleplay for CBS and short fiction for The Bark magazine. With coauthor Shelley Frost, she wrote Your Adopted Dog  (The Lyons Press). Holding a B.A. in Environmental Science Studies and a lifelong interest in animal issues, she spends a lot of her time battling a severe addiction to dogs.
