New Sony collar may soon have cats Tweeting

by Barb Kohn

A lot of cats have their own Facebook page. Now they soon may be able to Tweet too. Sony Computer Science Laboratories (CSL) in collaboration with the University of Tokyo has created a prototype tweeting cat collar, which the company unveiled last month.

PC World says the life-logging device can send tweets to Twitter with information about what your cat is doing. The device features an acceleration sensor, a GPS and built-in camera. Using the data gathered by the sensor, the device deduces your cat’s activities – walking, sleeping and eating, for example.

Cats may be able to swap their laptops for a Tweeting collar

Once the collar has detected what your cat is doing, it will send the data to a PC via Bluetooth wireless technology and then comments are posted on Twitter, according to Tech On from Nikkei Business Publications. A Tweet could be something like “this tastes good” when the cat is eating.

At this point, there are only 11 fixed phrases that can be used as comments, but Sony CSL is planning to increase the number of phrases and make it possible to change comments to reflect a preceding action. For example, Tech On explains if a cat eats something after taking a walk, a Tweet might be ‘meals taste better after a walk.’

The device, which can be attached to a cat’s collar, weighs just 5 percent of a cat’s weight so it doesn’t cause your cat discomfort. That certainly seems a lot more convenient than carrying around a laptop.

You can see a photo of the prototyped life-logging device here.
